Work on the census began in 2005, when an estimated 20,000 Pennsylvanians were living with autism.

The report predicts that number will grow to 25,000 next year, putting a strain on families living with the disorder.

"There are tremendous financial burdens for those families. It's important that we recognize autism for what it is, and develop programs to successfully deal with it," says Governor Rendell.

Governor Rendell says Pennsylvania is pioneering autism research and treatment. The state has dedicated nearly $20 million for autism services.
