DOVER TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNT - Three truckloads of donated items sprawled across a lawn at the Mount Royal Auction outside of Dover early Saturday morning.

"You name it, it was out on this field today," said Missy Nace, organizer of the "Totally Free Yard Sale."

All the items were given away for nothing.

"It's just amazing when a community decides what it can do," Nace said.

John Herbst and his family loaded up a truck and three other vehicles with all kinds of items for his cousin.

"We've got a refrigerator, a stove, a futon, an air conditioner, a couple of TVs," Herbst said.

All of those items will fill Kelly Conway's son's empty trailer.

"I think it's wonderful," Conway said. "Some of the stuff that was donated was absolutely wonderful. There was so much stuff there, and it wasn't total chaos, like I expected it to be."

"There sure is a need," Jeff Sterner of Mount Royal Auction said. "I think a lot of people got help today, and that's what it's all about."

Hundreds turned out to the event.

Many were just thankful someone is looking out for them in tough economic times.

"It's nice to know needy people can get stuff when they don't have money for it," Herbst said.

"People are really grateful," Nace said. "I've gotten a lot of 'thank yous' and a lot of big hugs."
