A hacker broke into the Cumberland County's Redevelopment computer system and stole almost half a million dollars from their M&T Banking Account.
The executive director at the Redevelopment Authority said the theft occurred on September 22.
$479,000 was electronically transferred to 11 different accounts from the Redevelopment Authority.
The stolen money involved state funds for a new project in Newville. The hacker got into their system by using a Clampi Virus.
The CEO of Aardvark Computers in Carlisle said it's not hard for hackers to get into your computer system, even if you have the proper anti-virus systems.
"Most of the protect you from 99% of the bugs out there, but none of them will protect you from 100%. There's always no substitute for common sense and safe computing as it were," said Frank Masland.
The hacker got the Redevelopment Authority's computer system, so M&T customers do not need to worry if they use online banking.
