YORK, YORK COUNTY -
In the midst of the continuing recession, a York woman takes a chance and opens a new business. So far, sales at Double D's Dogs on Continental Square are hot. The owner sells hot dogs, kielbasa, soft pretzels, even soups. Her hot dog cart is open on the northeast corner of the square.
Cindy Oakley says, "we've had people run from cars parked around here, just to get a hot dog and then run away and say I'll be back."
Customer Mike Maughlin says, "I always get the same thing, two chili dogs, I love the chili here."
Michael Gurreri, also a regular says, "my business is six blocks away, but this brings me downtown more."
Profits are rolling in, despite the troubled economy. Many customers say they like the feeling of community that comes with street vendors and are glad Oakley is operating in York.
Oakley says she will keep her carts operating through the winter, serving hot drinks as well. She's not the only street vending game in town though, there is another cart located in front of the County Courthouse.
