YORK COUNTY -
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and local advocates want you to know there are things you can do to help prevent more people from becoming victims. Experts in York County held a Town Hall meeting Tuesday night to raise awareness and talk about prevention.
They say listening is actually the most important thing you can do for a victim. If someone tells you they are being abused, hear what they have to say and then reach out for help.
Kristen Sechrist, Medical Advocacy Program Coordinator for the York County Y.W.C.A. says, "one of four women will experience some sort of domestic violence in their lifetime, that's way too many, way too many."
Men, senior citizens and children are also often victims of abuse. If you, or someone you know needs help, many local YWCA's and social service organizations offer assistance for victims of domestic abuse. In york county, call ACCESS York at 1-800-262-8444.
