MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNTY -
A car accident in Manchester Township, York County may cost your insurance company more than just the price of parts. The township Board of Supervisors passed an emergency service fee ordinance Tuesday night. Under the ordinance, insurance companies will be billed for traffic accident response.
"We'll bill their insurance company and hopefully the insurance company is going to pay the bill, if they send a refusal back to us, then we won't go any further," said Chief Richard Shank, Manchester Township Fire Department.
The fees will range from $175 for a minor accident to $550 for the most serious. The fire chief says the bills won't be passed on to the vehicle owners. Based on the number of crashes last year, the township expects to collect more than $30,000.
Township leaders say the plan has been in the works for about a year. They say the idea is to help residents by not raising taxes to pay for fire services.
"Probably 90% of the motor vehicle accidents in Manchester Township do not involve Manchester Township residents but they create a lot of expenses for you and every other taxpayer," said Dave Keiter, Manchester Township Solicitor.
