Police in Harrisburg are investigating an overnight shooting that killed one person and sent another to the hospital. Shots rang out around 3 a.m. along Regina and 17th Streets. Some neighbors say they heard over 15 shots, with one neighbor reporting nearly 100 shots from at least two weapons. One neighbor says he heard the shots, and when he stepped outside of his house, he saw a man lying on his stomach on the ground suffering from a serious gunshot wound to the leg. Police arrived on the scene and were told about another victim who was shot in the chest and lying between houses on the 1700 block of Regina Street.
Troy Smith, 19, from the Uptown section of the City had been shot in the chest. He spoke briefly to police at the scene. He died moments later at Hershey Medical Cener. The other victim, identified only as a 23 year-old male from Allison Hill, was shot in the leg and is expected to survive.
Police say the 23 year-old victim told them he was approached by four black males. One of the group began shooting and the victim was hit in the leg and fell to the ground.
Neighbors say this is a rough neighborhood where gunfire is not out of the norm.
"Probably almost anywhere in this city, you take a chance. When I got here in 2003, it was a good city to live in, It's not a bad city now but for the most part it's going downhill," said neighbor Malvern Osborne.
At this point, police say they don't have any suspects in custody.
A team of detectives responded to investigate and are still actively interviewing people.
A few hours later, two teenagers defied officers and detectives and entered the crime scene. They were enraged due to the death, claiming the deceased was related to one of them. Both teens were warned but they wildly fought with the officers in their attempt to get to the spot where the deceased was found. Both teens were taken into custody and are being charged with Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and related offenses. They were taken to the Police Bureau office for processing.
