"I think this fire was well advanced before we even got a notification on it and was well ahead of firefighters when they first got there," said Chief John Senft, York City Fire Department.

The heavy flames and thick black smoke are gone, but the aftermath is just as devastating. Several row homes are now nothing but rubble, despite the efforts of dozens of firefighters.

Crews from all over York county were called in. Capt. Chuck Zienkiewicz with West York Fire Department says this was the worst row home fire he has ever had to battle.

"I don't think any firefighter could say it wasn't overwhelming, it was a pretty tough situation," said Capt. Chuck Zienkiewicz.

A tough situation that only got worse as the fire quickly spread from building to building. With no fire walls, the homes burned one after another.
