YORK, PA -
A fire police officer, struck by a car, remains in serious condition at York Hospital.
Melvin Lehr, 72, was directing traffic Thursday morning at the intersection of Baltimore Pike and Mead Road in Washington Township, York County. He was struck by a car driven by William Lehman, 18, of Dillsburg.
Family members say Lehr had to have his left leg amputated. His right leg has multiple fractures.
"We got through 24 hours, it was a miracle. It was the miracle we were hoping for," said Lesa Romig, Melvin's niece.
Romig says her uncle has not been alert enough to talk about the crash. Right now, the family is focusing on recovery.
"He is just a fun-loving man, he loves to hunt and fish, he was a farmer for most of his life," said Romig.
Volunteers at the Liberty Fire Company in East Berlin are also coming to grips with what happened. Lehr has been a member of the department for 15 years.
"Couldn't believe it, just couldn't believe it was Mel, he is a good fireman," said Keith Baker, Liberty Fire Company.
Lehr's family members say the next 48 hours are critical. They are thankful for the outpouring of support and prayer from the community.
