CUMBERLAND COUNTY—
An elderly mother and her mentally challenged daughter are home safe and sound after being lost for 2 days. The ordeal began on Sunday when 80-year-old Hannah Miller of Carlisle went to pick up her daughter, Elizabeth, at a group home in Perry County. They were planning to have lunch, but somewhere along the way, they took an unintended detour."I am so grateful to be home, I can do nothing but thank the Lord for that because I don't think I ever had any sense of direction," said Miller.
Miller put a lot more miles on her Mazda than she expected to. She ended up traveling the turnpike all the way from Perry County to Irwin, Pennsylvania, which is about 20 miles outside of Pittsburgh.
"I wasn't too worried, not the way I should have been I guess, as long as I was on a main route, it didn't bother me too much," said Miller.
Although Miller wasn't worried, police and her friends were. Authorities issued a picture of Miller and her daughter, as well as a description of the car. The two were finally spotted Tuesday night at a gas station in Dauphin County. Miller says she had no idea anyone was even looking for her.
"I really wasn't frightened, like I said, if I had been in the mountains or something like that, I would have been," said Miller.
Miller says she stopped several times to ask for directions. She says the lesson she learned is, steer clear of the turnpike.
