Washington Township, York County -
A fire police officer with Liberty Fire Company in East Berlin, York County was struck by a car and seriously injured this morning. The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. along Baltimore Pike, Route 194 and Lake Meade Road in Washington Township, York County.
Officials tell Fox43, the fire police officer was directing traffic around a previous accident on Baltimore Pike. His car was blocking the southbound lanes of 194. He was walking with his back turned to traffic, when a car went around his car and struck him from behind. One eyewitness says he was thrown about 50 feet. He was flown by medivac helicopter to York Hospital. His injuries are believed to be serious. The identity of the victim is not being released at this point but a fellow fire police officer tell us he was a lieutenant with the department and he is in his 70s.
Officials expect to have Route 194 opened by 10 a.m. The details of the accident are under investigation by the State Police. It is too early to tell if the driver in the striking vehicle will be charged.
