NORTH LONDONDERRY TOWNSHIP, LEBANON COUNTY -
If you look up Palmyra, Lebanon County, in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, you find it is known as the sinkhole capitol of America. And once again, it is holding true to its title. Route 422 is closed again so crews can repair a hole in the road.
This is the just latest hole to grace this stretch of Route 422. Crews say, they think they have a good patch in place and hope to have the road reopened by later today or tomorrow, but people say, it will probably pop up again.
Crews are back to work again on a stretch of roadway all to familiar to them. Route 422, near the Palmyra/North Londonderry Township line is once again closed because of a sinkhole.
"I just feel sorry for the people who keep working on the roads, they just keep popping up," said bowler Roger Carpenter.
This latest hole was noticed on Monday. Crews closed the road on Monday night and began digging up the hole on Tuesday. When they got underground, they found a hole near a concrete slab that was installed during a previous repair of the road. Road crews are now filling this latest hole with rock and concrete to secure the roadway.
This stretch of road has seen its fair share of problems. Similar holes have closed all, or portions, of 422 four times this year, including once in January, April, June and now. All four of the closures have been right in front of the Palmyra Bowling Center and the bar, aptly named the Sinkhole Saloon. While the owners say, it isn't great for business, they also say, they expect to see the problems pop up again.
"We just know it is the sink hole capitol of the world as I like to say it. I don't know if it really is or not," said Palmyra Bowling Center owner Amy Eiserman during a April interview.
Nearly 20 thousand cars drive this route each day. If you are one of them, here is a way to get around the mess. PennDot has set up detours off of 422, using Routes 177, 322 and 934 as alternates.
Crews hope to have this hole backfilled and repaved today and the road reopened later on. PennDot crews say, beware though, if all doesn't go well, construction could spill over until tomorrow.
