ADAMS COUNTY, PA - Deer season opening day turns tragic for an Adams County man. The 50-year-old was hunting on his own property in Tyrone Township. When he didn't come home at dark, his family began searching and eventually called 911. Crews found him about 400 yards into the woods on the ground, under a tree and unconscious. He was flown to Hershey Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. It is believed he had a heart attack.

"How long he had been laying there, we don't know, no one knows," said Lewis Alexander, Aspers EMS Captain.

Alexander says the man, who had health issues, should never have entered the woods alone.

"You don't want to hunt by yourself, because you don't know if you're going to trip over a log, slip out of your tree stand, you just don't know," said Alexander.

He says don't go by yourself, even if you have a cell phone.

"There is no cell service, what is a dead phone going to do for you," said Alexander.

Alexander does recommend carrying a GPS unit and an emergency kit filled with supplies like high protein snacks, matches, a space blanket, a whistle, and flares.
