Caliente is a Copycat!

It appears Caliente is a total copycat.

Yesterday, I was packing for my trip to Puerto Rico - yay Andrew and I leave on Thursday! - and Caliente decided to lend a "paw."

He jumped in my suitcase, hoping to get in on my warmer vacation. (Caliente does mean hot in Spanish) But, it was the same thing Velvet did to the suitcase of Lynette's mom as she packed for Atlanta!

See -- both of our pets are sick of this cold winter weather!

Baby, Come Back!

My parents finally left to go back to Atlanta this morning. We were together for about a month....yeah, although time went by so quickly! I went to see them the 2nd week of December and they came to see me Christmas Eve through today. I already miss them tremendously but I'm not the only one!

Velvet is really having a tough time with their absence. His troubles started last night when my mother was packing. He jumped into her suitcase and would not get out. I'm not sure what transpired after that because I went upstairs to go to sleep. There was probably a lot of hugging and kissing between the two of them and my mom telling Velvet, that my father and she would be back soon!

Pitt Set to Play in the Sun Bowl

A common enemy! - (aka - The Oregon State Beavers)

Thus, Wednesday's big Sun Bowl game featuring the Pitt Panthers, has several subplots -- and they continue right into the Rose Bowl on Thursday!

PA is looking great as a football state with two teams in major bowls this year, and it's probably unfair that Penn State (ranked #6) has gotten so much more coverage this college bowl season than Pitt (ranked #18).

Even though the Nittany Lions have a stellar 11-1 record, the Panthers are no slouch team with a 9-3 winning season behind them, and a slot in the 75th Sun Bowl.

Now, as Paul Harvey would say, here is the rest of the story!

SO FAR THIS SEASON:

Penn State *beat* Oregon State 45 to 15

Oregon State *beat* USC 27 to 21

THIS WEEK'S BOWLS

Pitt *will play* Oregon State (Weds) - Sun Bowl

Penn State *will play* USC (Thurs) - Rose Bowl

So....three things jump out in terms of gameday scenarios:

1.) Pitt has a chance to beat the team that beat USC, thus making a big statement.

2.) Penn State *already* smashed Oregon State, (again the one team that beat USC). So, I'm not so sure the Lions should be considered such *underdogs* in the Rose Bowl...

3.) Both of Pennsylvania's Division I college football teams have a real chance to go undefeated in two major bowls this year!

Another Christmas has come and gone and just like all the Christmas' in the past it was absolutely wonderful! I was blessed to be able to spend it with my loved ones and as usual Santa was so, so, good to me.....Yeah Santa!! Once again Santa got me everything I put on my Christmas list and more but the best gift I received over Christmas is being able to spend the holiday with my mother and father....they are the best parents ever!!!!

I hope you had a happy and safe holiday. Just like you, I was very busy - visiting with family, going to parties, lots of hustle and bustle.

Santa gave me Scrabble, Diamond Edition. My sister and I have already played several times.

And I bought my cat, Caliente, a Crinkle Cave. It's a nylon tent that has a noisy floor and strings hang from the ceiling. It's almost a resort for cats. He loves it. (Although Cali did almost ruin Christmas by opening up all his presents the night before. Sneaky.)

Plus, after all the dinners, desserts and snacks I'm just exhausted but we have to conserve our energy for New Year's - right??

FOX 43 Yule Log Burning Brightly

So far as we can tell, we were the only major television station in central PA to do this on Christmas morning (and for 5 hours, from 5am to 10am).

48 Hours Til' Christmas Just Getting Started

You may have seen our story on FOX 43 News this morning. It's true, as a *general* rule, the next two days, including Christmas Eve itself, if you head to the mall you will see mostly men walking around from shop to shop, trying to quickly "get er' done!"

I actually have finished up early this year. (uh, a whole three days out)!

So here are my top 5 tips for people like me who just, for whatever reason, like to put off grabbing those gifts until the last possible second!

1.) DON'T FORGET THE IPOD OR AT LEAST EAR PLUGS. (this will allow you to drown out the the repetitive Christmas music that will be crankin' in every store on the cusp of the holiday. After all, you need to focus on the mission at hand!)

2.) BE PREPARED TO RUN INTO YOUR BUDDIES. (now is not the time to wear that pink shirt the little lady bought you for your birthday. Why? because you are mainly going to see all guys, including some you know, in that critical "last 48 hrs.")

3.) DON'T FORGET TO ASK FOR GIFT WRAPPING. (even if it costs more, you aren't gonna have to time to wrap those last second grabs. Not only that, but every room in the house where you might do this in secret is already filled with relatives at this late stage of the game!)

4.) BE PREPARED TO GET CREATIVE. (sad to say, but one hazard of waiting to the last second is that many displays in the store will be 'blown out." So have a number two choice. Or, even a number three. Or, just be ready to grab anything available. Hey, desperate times can call for desperate measures!)

5.) LET THE ONLY WOMEN AT THE MALL HELP YOU. (i.e. - the poor gals that get stuck working at retailers on Christmas Eve and even the day before, when they'd rather be home relaxing with family and looking at all the presents they bought weeks ago that are already neatly wrapped under the tree. Bottom Line: they can give you valuable, and truly last second, gift advice. Especially when having to pick from whatever sparse stock is still on the shelf!)

That's it. All you need to get it done in one fell swoop! Good luck gentlemen!

I Conquered the Cookie Exchange

This weekend I baked for my first cookie exchange.

We had to each make 3 dozen cookies. However, I did not read the directions properly. (See my first problem in the kitchen??) I thought we had to bake 3 different types of cookies - a dozen each. But, no, we were only supposed to bring in 36 cookies of the same recipe. Needless to say, I spent more time mixing and stirring than I needed to.

Here's what I made: Caramel Surprise - chocolate cookie with a Rolo inside. No Bake Cookies: coconut and oats mixed in chocolate. And Swedish Heirloom Cookies - a delicious shortbread cookie with pecans.

Fox43 Morning News viewer Joyce from Gettysburg sent me the Swedish Heirloom recipe - and so I had to try it because my ancestry is Swedish. And they came out great - easy and yummy! Thank you Joyce!!

If you watch the Fox43 Morning show then you already know that I was not here for a little over a week. I was in Atlanta visiting my parents and friends! I had a wonderful time doing exactly what I wanted which included hanging out with my parents, sleeping, eating, sleeping, eating , shopping, going to Christmas parties and did I say sleeping and eating?

Atlanta is also called Hotlanta because it is known as the New York city or the L.A. of the South. I'm not exactly sure if the weather has anything to do with the name but if it does the city absolutely lived up to it's name during my visit....temperatures were in the upper 60's to 70!!

I had a blast in Atlanta but I must say I'm glad to be back!

Meeting a News Icon

Yes, that's right. I actually met the squirrel I affectionately call "the Twiggster" up close and personal at the FOX station in Detroit, Michigan.

As a matter of fact, I even got to hold this "star animal athlete!"

Some tidbits you might not know about this real life water skier:

1.) Twiggy, despite the neutral name, is a "she", not a "he"! (I forget this sometimes.)

2.) Her owners felt their squirrel needed a stage name and decided to name her "Twiggy" since she chewed the leaves off all of the family house plants leaving nothing but twigs.

3.) The Sanford Herald, heard about the little aquatic squirrel and published the first newspaper story about her in May of 1979. The Orlando Sentinel followed. ABC out of Orlando, FL filmed the first news story - which ran on Good Morning America winning an Emmy award for the story. And a star was born!! (and local news icon)

4.) Several generations of Twigs have been performing for twenty-seven years - traveling all across the US, Canada, Bermuda, Paris, France and Germany. Currently, Twiggy IV is touring again.

5.) Twiggy always puts safety first. She never goes on the water without her little squirrel sized life-jacket and she is always sharing the importance of water-safety to all her adoring fans.

My Time Off

I had a super busy, long weekend. Isn't that how it always happens? You need a vacation after your vacation??

Here's what I did.

Thursday: Andrew and I went to see alma mater Saint Joseph's basketball team play against big rival Villanova. Also known as the "Holy War." It was an incredible nail-biter. SJU lead the ENTIRE game - only to lose by just a few points in the last seconds of the game. We still had a blast.

Friday: We went out to dinner with Andrew's brother Johnny and his girlfriend, Caitlin. I saw the biggest gingerbread house - EVER.

Saturday: We headed up to NYC to visit my friend Lauren and her new kitten, Lord Wellington III. Plus, my good friend from my last TV station - Lindsey - flew in from Chicago! We had a fabulous time.

Sunday: Drove back from the Big Apple.

Monday: Spent the day wrapping presents, watching movies and taking pictures of my orange cat, Caliente.

Now, I need a nap!!

Yes, she's "real." Not just in the movie Anchorman either! (but there has been a long line of Twiggys through the decades...)

In fact I actually had the chance to meet this water skiing legend and even "let Twiggy give me a hug" at a previous TV station.

At least once a month the Fox43 Morning Crew likes to get together after the 4 hour show and have breakfast. Not only do we get to blow off a little steam but we get to bond as friends and not just as co-workers.

We laugh, joke and have a good time. It was our second time getting together for breakfast but I do believe this is a tradition that is going to last for a very long time and one that we look forward to every month!

Yes, during the holidays, everyone is crazed with the hustle and the bustle. But it IS fun to see all your favorite people -- squeezed into these busy weeks.

On Saturday, Andrew and I visited our friends Tracy and Dave for their annual holiday party. Tracy is my mentor and has been an amazing help in getting my career started.

Her house was decorated beautiful and the food was divine. Especially the chocolate fondue fountain. It was surrounded by fruit, pretzels, marshmallows and every other sweet treat you can drizzle with melted chocolate. Yum.

Then on Sunday, Lynette and her poodle, Velvet came for dinner. My cat Caliente wanted nothing to do with Velvet but Abbie - my 75 pound yellow lab - was strangely intrigued. What was this small, gray dog that isn't afraid? Miss Abbie growled and showed her teeth a few times - but I think they are just building a long-lasting friendship, or dogship.

Penn State Stands Ready...

THE SMART MONEY IS PROBABLY ON USC, BUT OREGON STATE COULD STILL SNEAK IN TO FACE PENN STATE IN THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES....

What's that old saying? Oh, yeah. Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

After concluding their regular season on Nov. 22 with a 49-18 Senior Day thumping of Michigan State in Beaver Stadium, all that was left for the sixth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions was to sit back and wait to find out who their opponent in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl game would be.

Given that their own BCS national championship hopes were basically torched in a 24-23, last-second loss at Iowa on Nov. 8, what the Big Ten Conference co-champion Lions (11-1) were wishing for was a New Year's Day matchup against the best possible Pacific-10 Conference opponent, a team that would give them a chance to enhance their national reputation and buttress their contention that they were indeed worthy of national-title consideration.

The only team capable of providing such a boost is No. 5 Southern California.

What Penn State did not want was a rematch with Oregon State, whom the Lions pasted, 45-14, on Sept. 6. There isn't much prestige in reprising a victory over a team you've already crushed by 31 points, and what of the alternative?

So, in a way, the results of LAST weekend's games were a plus for Penn State. Oregon State's bid for its first Rose Bowl in 44 years was clinging to a very slender thread following a 65-38 loss to visiting Oregon, and USC took care of business with a perfunctory 38-3 dismissal of what used to be Notre Dame.

All the Trojans (10-1, 7-1 Pac-10) need to do to secure their fourth straight appearance in the Rose Bowl is to knock off cross-town rival UCLA (4-7, 3-5) next Saturday, ironically on the Bruins' Rose Bowl home field.

A huge upset by UCLA would create a three-way tie for the Pac-10 title among USC, Oregon State and Oregon, but the Beavers would go to Pasadena on a tiebreaker. But although USC lost to UCLA in much the same circumstances in 2006, the likelihood of that happening again is remote.

The only problem for Penn State is that catching the Trojans, the way they've been playing of late, might not be such a wonderful thing after all.

So defensively dominating was USC against Notre Dame that the Fighting Irish were limited to four first downs and 91 total yards.

"We're playing the best we've ever played," USC coach Pete Carroll when asked about his dominating defense.

Make no mistake, Penn State is a definite upgrade over the Illinois team that USC hammered, 49-17, in last season's Rose Bowl.

*And don't forget, under coach JoePa, the Lions have won their last three bowl games and are 23-10-1 in postseason appearances.*

This would be the first such meeting for Penn St. and USC since the Trojans beat the Lions, 29-5, in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 27, 2000.

Thanksgiving Day Weekend!

I always have so much to be thankful for and this Thanksgiving was no exception. My parents prepared an extraordinary Thanksgiving dinner!

Friday we went to Maryland to visit my extended family and we all laughed, talked and ate and ate some more!

Saturday was my Uncle's birthday so we all went out to dinner to celebrate. It was a lovely engagement with family and friends, wonderful ambiance and good food!

I ate way too much food this weekend. We had Thanksgiving at my grandmother's house in New Hampshire. The next morning we visited my cousins for breakfast just before celebrating my cousin's birthday - complete with cake!

I'm finally out of my food coma and back to working out - but all those calories were worth it.

It was awesome visiting and spending time with a bunch of family - I hope you had a wonderful holiday too!

**For my money, this is one of the finest Presidential traditions. And from a news standpoint, it's always good for a laugh!

Thanksgiving at the White House, 2008

This year marks the 61st anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation. Though live Thanksgiving turkeys have been presented intermittently to presidents since the Lincoln administration, the current ceremony dates to 1947, when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was presented to President Harry Truman.

The presentation at times has brushed against broader history. For example, the November 1963 event was one of President Kennedy's last in the Rose Garden. The first President Bush conducted the 1990 ceremony just before leaving for Thanksgiving with the troops in the Persian Gulf region. President Clinton in 1996 returned from an Asian summit and literally went directly to the ceremony.

The 2008 National Thanksgiving Turkey and its alternate are from Ellsworth, Iowa and were raised under the direction of National Turkey Federation Chairman Paul Hill. The 20-week old turkey, weighed about 45 pounds, when he was driven to Washington.

The National Thanksgiving Turkey was raised using normal feeding and other production techniques. The one exception is they were provided increased interaction with people so that they would be prepared for their role at the White House Ceremony.

After the presentation, the turkey will be flown first class to Disneyland Resort in Southern California, where he will be the grand marshal of "Disney's Thanksgiving Day Parade." After the parade, guests will be able to visit the turkey in Frontierland section.

Velvet's First Snow of the Season....

was a nice surprise for him! I took him for one of his many daily walks on Friday. He walked out the door and went to one of his favorite plants but this time his routine was a little different. He sniffed the white stuff then marked the plant (his territory), Usually he marks the plant then sniffs other things around it.

From there, he proceeded to run across the street into the snow covered grass and play around burying his nose in the snow and coming up with it on his nose....he is so cute!

Velvet had an appointment to get a hair cut on Friday but after I saw the snow, I knew that I would have to reschedule for the middle of the week or it would have been a waste of time and money. By the time Velvet got back into the house he had snow on his legs, the top of his head, and his nose....He had a fabulous weekend!

Kiersten and I did something everyone woman must do before she dies.....visit a chocolate factory because it is a known fact that besides diamonds, chocolate is a girl's best friend!

I was really intrigued on the tour around the Wolfgang Candy Factory because I really liked the book and the movie Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.

The factory really did have several pieces of equipment that reminded me of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory! It was a lot of fun to see how the food that I hold so near and dear to my heart is made. And of course with any good tour you get a sample at the end and what a sample it was.....yummy peanut bears!

Any day of the year is perfect to eat and receive chocolate but with the holidays here, it is a must that you have decadent chocolate to satisfy your taste buds. I recommend the chocolate from Wolfgang Candy Factory....it gets two thumbs up!

-Penn State will in all likelyhood go to the Rose Bowl, however, the Lions could squeak into the National Title (BCS Bowl) if the stars aligned just right (Texas, Oklahoma, USC, and probably Texas Tech would all have to lose one of their remaining games) *But* - Ohio State *has* backed into the BCS Title game that way before.

-In the much more probable Rose Bowl scenerio - Penn State's Pac 10 opponent should end up being USC or Oregon State (the later who Penn St. already stomped in Happy Valley 45-14 back on Sept. 6th).

-Paterno has coached Penn State to two national titles, in 1982 and 1986, and five undefeated seasons, in 1994, 1986, 1973, 1969 and 1968. He is the only coach to win each of the four major bowls -- Rose, Orange, Fiesta and Sugar -- as well as the Cotton Bowl at least once.

-On ESPN College Gameday Saturday AM, before the big win over Michigan State, it was said that JoePa "does not take painkillers for his bad hip" and "even though it's painful bone on bone, that he just use a little "Old Grand-Dad (Bourbon) to ease the pain"

-Penn State quarterback coach Jay Paterno said Thursday night that his father's plan for Saturday night would be as follows: "He'll go home, have an Old Grand-Dad on the rocks and watch games." His hip surgery would follow Sunday.

-JoePa has already declared the heck with retirement, he'll run out of the tunnel next year as the Nittany Lions head coach.

...it was Madonna. Her Saturday night performance in Atlantic City left me speechless and gave me goosebumps!

She sang a bunch of her older hits: La Isla Bonita, Vogue, and You Must Love Me (from the movie Evita -- an awesome song).

The performances and dances were non-stop for two hours - we were out of our seats the whole time. My feet are killing me this morning.

Madonna also played a lot of guitar, wore amazing costumes and even did double-dutch jump rope.

I can't wait to see her again!

I am seeing Madonna this weekend. Can you stand it?

She has been a music fixture in my life since I was little so this is a HUGE concert. My outfit is already planned.

It's in Atlantic City at Boardwalk Hall. Andrew and I have dinner reservations at Buddakan in Caesar's before the concert. It's one of my favorite places to eat - we've visited the location in NYC but never in AC before. I can't wait.

So I'm sure I'll still be glowing next week. And Monday morning I'll be sure to blog about the whole thing.

Every morning I provide Fox43 Morning News viewers with live shots in different cities. One of the live shots that I show is in Harrisburg featuring the beautiful State Museum.

Kiersten and I had the opportunity to visit the State Museum and it was a very informative, interesting, timely and fun experience.

There was so much to see. The art was absolutely magnificent and the history behind it made my experience that much more satisfying. The animals looked so real that I actually thought I was in the scene with them. It was a little scary, breathtaking and thrilling all at the same time! This was my first visit but it definitely will not be my last.

(From the AP) - Detroit's Big Three automakers pleaded with a reluctant Congress Tuesday for a $25 billion lifeline to save the once-proud titans of U.S. industry, pointedly warning of a national economic catastrophe should they collapse. Millions of layoffs would follow their demise, they said, as damaging effects rippled across an already-faltering economy.

"Our industry ... needs a bridge to span the financial chasm that has opened up before us," General Motors Corp. (GM) CEO Rick Wagoner told the Senate Banking Committee.

And Robert Nardelli, CEO of Chrysler LLC, told the panel the bailout would be "the least costly alternative" when compared with damage from bankruptcy.

OPTION 2: NO, let the Big Three all file for bankruptcy and make the critical, albeit painful changes, they need to survive.

(From an Op-Ed by Mitt Romney) - IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs.

Welcome to my Smurf Village.

When I was little, I got a Smurf for my first Christmas from my Uncle Eddie. Now, 26 years later, he is still in my life.

He's no longer bright blue, his eyes are colored in with black marker, his ear had to be sewn on after my dog chewed it off and his tail had to be reattached after I snipped it with scissors.

Needless to say, Smurf and I have had a long, loyal relationship. And don't most of us have a favorite toy, stuffed animal, blanket, etc?

My sister still has Mookie, her stuffed animal walrus that only has one tusk.

And Lynette still has her Curious George.

See - we all are still kids at heart!

Snow Very Light is in the Forecast!

You saw some flakes flying during the Pittsburgh Steelers game last night if you were watching, and you heard MaryEllen Pann talk about the white stuff starting to fly in Central PA starting this week!

Two ways to look at this; with a sense of dread, or embrace it!

I say you might as well stay positive and embrace the flakes.

The photo in this blog, from one of my favorite winter sports spots here in the Keystone, good ole' Elk Mountain up in Union Dale, PA. And its from October 28th!!

Granted, you may have never heard of it, and it's not the most heavily skied spot, (like say Camelback Mountain), but I like it the best of the spots I've tried in-state.

Why? Great terrain, and even though it's been a few years, I remember they had great "off trail" terrain in the trees - a bit dangerous, but fun!!

So I say bring on the cold, bring on the snow, and get the skis and/or board ready!!

If you watched Fox43 Morning News show today - you would have heard my sickness. I have a frog in my throat!

My cold started Wednesday night and things got so bad I had to take off Friday and head to the doctor. She told me I have a virus - ugh - that could take 7 to 10 days!

Fortunately, she said I'm not contagious. Unfortunately, when I was, Lynette caught my germs. She's recovering today.

But here are a few things that I NEED during my illness:

I bet you'll never guess who we had live in the studio this morning on the Fox43 Morning News show? I will give you a hint: He is extremely thin, he travels a lot, and his name rhymes with Cat Manly. Do you give up? It was Flat Stanley!

He traveled to us all the way from Miss Ryan's 3rd grade class at Grant D. Morse Elementary School in Saugerties, New York.

His Journey started last month and so far, he's been to Port St. Lucie, Florida, then he went to Fort Myers where he went swimming in the gulf of Mexico.

After that , he traveled to Seneca Falls, New York where he played at a State Park. From there, he moved on to Waterloo, New York and today he is here visiting the Fox43 News Station.

He has to be back in Saugerties in two weeks, so who knows where else he will go before then.

I Got a Check for 347!

A few months ago, I got a letter in the mail from the PA Unclaimed Property Bureau....saying I was owed a paycheck from a job I had years ago.

It was $347.17 from when I was working at a TV station in Philadelphia. When I left for another job, my address got lost in the mix.

So to reclaim it, I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, make copies of my driver's license and pay stubs and get it all notarized.

Then, just a few weeks a letter I got my check!!

Those Long Election Lines in PA

Whether or not you like the outcome, it's hard to deny it was a historic election here in PA, and across the nation.

But here's a question. How long did you have to wait to cast your vote?

I voted in the York area, and thought I would beat much of the crowd by going strategically between lunchtime and "quitting time."

So, I arrived about 3pm.

But, the line was still huge. It took a solid hour and a half to get to the voting booth. And a campaign rep there said it was "even longer in the morning."

Not that I minded that much, I brought a book so I was reading the whole time and luckily the weather held.

But, just a thought, in every other state I've voted in, Maryland, Michigan, and Delaware, I've never had to wait more than 5 or 10 minutes.

So maybe PA just needs more polling places? We heard some reports of people waiting more than two hours in line. That's a bit excessive I think.

Then again, I'm sure some of you were lucky like Kiersten and Lynette, and just walked right in!

Halloween....a treat not a trick!

Halloween began as a treat with the weather, then you throw in the fabulous costumes and of course the candy and you have a Halloween that you will always remember!

My sister and I tagged along with my little cousins Nylah and Christopher when their parents took them trick or treating. We (my sister and I ) were reminiscing about our trick or treating days and all of our favorite costumes.

Every few houses Nylah would look back at me and yell "Lynette I got some more Reeses peanut butter cups!" She knows that is one of my favorite pieces of candy along with Snickers, Twix, Kit Kat and Reeses Peanut Butter Stix....there are more but I don't want to run out of room!

After we took the kids trick or treating, I went to a Halloween party. It was a lot of fun...I went as a Geisha!

Cupcakes Costumes

Halloween is over! So sad - but we had a great time at our friend's house. They threw a festive party.

A group of us girls dressed up as Phillies Ball Girls. It was an easy costume and I got to wear sneakers which were super comfy because I'm always in heels. Plus, I baked Phillies cupcakes. They were a hit, if I don't mind saying so myself!

Andrew and his two friends dressed up as characters from the movie, The Big Lebowski. If you have seen the movie - you would find this HILARIOUS. Andrew actually won best costume for being Walter Sobchak.

Will JoePa Be Smiling When the Final Polls Come In

Well, here is the bottom line of the situation in college football for the still undefeated Penn State football team.

They have very good shot at staying undefeated, and of course becoming undisputed Big Ten Conference champions in the process.

The problem basically this. One, Texas and Alabama *could stay undefeated, becoming Big 12 and SEC champions, and staying ranked #1 and #2.

Why would they stay ranked above an undefeated Big Ten champ? Blame Ohio State. Thanks to their very poor showings the last several years in the National Title game against Teams from the SEC, the voters may have little desire to put the Big 10 champ, albeit a different one, back in the big game to face yet another southern "speed" team.

The possible saving grace? Joe Pa. He's finished undefeated before and be denied a shot at the title game. So maybe the voters will give the Blue and White their shot as a career capstone for him. (but in the meantime, route for Texas and / or Alabama to lose!)

The game was great, you could feel the energy, and you could see the excitement.

Andrew was there and he said he had goosebumps for hours. I still have some "Phils chills" even this morning!

Plus, I have a "special" connection, if you will, to Phils pitcher Jamie Moyer. He's the PA native and most wise player in the MLB (doesn't wise sound better than oldest?) But Jamie also played baseball at Saint Joseph's University - my alma mater!

Regardless, congrats Phils.

Phillies Comfort Phood

It's been a roller coaster World Series. You know, after vicious weather leads to the historic postponement of Game 5 as Tampa Bay and the Phils are tied at 2. I'm on pins and needles!

Last night, I needed some type of indulgence so I turned to good ole' comfort food. We feasted on yummy cheesesteaks with french fries. Yes, it totally threw my 30 minute kickboxing work-out out the window but it was worth it.

I just can't wait to see the boys parade down Broad Street! Good luck tonight Phils!

Had a great time with Kiersten and Lynette at the 2008 York Halloween Parade!

There were a ton of great costumes on the parade participants - and on so many of the people who came out to watch.

But - I have to admit my two favorites from that day are in this photo. Mrs. Pennsylvania certainly looked gorgeous as Snow White, and I have to be honest, the "wicked witch" riding with her didn't really scare me. But, they both certainly looked great!

All in all, a very fun day and I really enjoyed seeing so many thousands of people along the parade route!!

Being in the York Halloween Parade totally got me in the mood for costumes. We had a such fun time cruising through the city - on Corvettes! - checking out all the cool ideas.

And all the costumes reminded me of my favorite costume. My grandmother Nana made it, by hand. She put blood, sweat and tears into my furry outfit. The head part of the costume was so big my whole body would weeble and wobble when I walked.

Turkey Point

The "light" was a lighthouse! We visited Turkey Point in North East, Maryland. It's the very northern tip of the Chesapeake Bay.

My mom, grandmother and I visited the lighthouse there. It's not in operation anymore - but it did have the most women lighthouse keepers on the Bay. I love girl power!

Clash of the Big Ten Titans!

Even though many Pennsylvanian's eyes will be focused on the Phillies playing at home - and right here on FOX 43 Saturday night - another sports battle is brewing for the weekend that could prove even bigger for Keystone State pride.

I'm talking about still undefeated Penn State football. I'm talking about #3 in the nation by the BCS rankings, behind the only two other undefeated BCS teams, Alabama and Texas.

Now, if Penn State can beat a resurgent (albeit one-loss) Buckeye team this Saturday night in Ohio, they could well be on their way to a spot in the National Title game. Why do I say this? Because their remaining schedule after Ohio State only gets easier, while Alabama's stays very tough, including a possible SEC title game - which the Big 10 doesn't have.

Early prediction: if Penn State can score a win on the road this weekend against the Bucks, it could well end up being Penn State vs. Texas for all the marbles at the end of the college season.

How great would that be for Joe Pa in the twilight of his coaching career?

A Taste of the Good Life

Forget Napa Valley - you can get a taste of the good life right here in Central P-A.

This weekend we went to Twinbrook Winery in Gap, Lancaster County.

It's a beautiful vineyard where they do everything - grow, harvest, ferment, and even hand-bottle the wine on -site!

We lucked out and had a special tour with the winemaker himself, Tim. Everything is in an restored, 19th- century barn. Plus, you can taste several of their wines for $5. Can't beat that!

Grillin' Up the Veggies !

Hello All...

Bit of funny story that happened during commercial break this morning during the morning news. I asked Kiersten and Lynette if they liked food that is grilled out. They both responded enthusiastically, "oh yeah, we love it!"

So, and maybe this is a bit of gender thing, I immediately perked up and assumed they were thinking what I was thinking. (I was thinking, T-Bone steaks, or maybe chicken breast or pork ribs, etc.) So of course I followed up, "that's great, what are some of your favorites?"

Imagine my expression when Kiersten chimes any, "I just love veggies off the grill" and Lynette followed up "oh, corn, definitely."

Now, I like my grilled veggies as much as the next guy, it just caught me off guard a bit! One saving grace in my "carnivore" mindset, they did say they like "shrimp on the barbie." Seafood, but a very tasty choice!

Just a quick note on "Grillin' Out During the Fall" - heck, I love smoking pork, chicken, and beef so much that I've been known to fire up the grill even in the depth of winter.

What the heck, those coals still get hot!!

I had some luck this past weekend, picking up a nice Weber at a firesale price (because I guess it's the "end" of the grilling "season" for many people.

But not for me!

A few of my top B-B-Q secrets:

1.) use all natural coal (I like "Cowboy" brand)

2) soak and add some wood chips (I like hickory, apple, etc. )

3.) be sure put some dry rub on the outside of pork, dry rub or spicy bbq sauce on chicken (I like Stubb's brand), and since most steak is so good on it's own, I keep it simple with a ground pepper / sea salt / olive oil rub.

4.) be careful not to pierce meat or leave it on too long - thus drying it out - juicy is the key (as well as smoky and spicy!)

Isn't it exciting to rally behind a team, a city, a state - that hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to sports? We are the underdogs of underdogs.

My boyfriend Andrew has tickets to Game 5, one of the morning show editors paid a few hundred dollars to get a seat as well - and like many of you - I'll be watching the excitement right here on Fox43!

And I will also be showing my Phillies spirit this Halloween. I'm dressing up as a "Phillies ball girl" with some other friends. And I want to make Phillies cupcakes - stay tuned for those pictures but to check out my costume click on the photo gallery!

Busy As a Bee

I had two days off this week for my sister Juliana's 21st Birthday!

We visited her down at college in Maryland where she's very busy student teaching. My grandmother Nana flew in for the celebration. And she even made a stop here at the Fox43 studios to watch the morning show.

Plus, last weekend I celebrated my friend Meg McG's birthday. She is my roomie from freshman year of college. See I have lots of Libras in my life!

Hello bloggers!

I just had to weigh in before I take off for the weekend, and let everyone know the just about everyone here at FOX 43 is pulling hard for Joe Pa and the boys in Blue and White!

That includes me, and I didn't go to Penn State and even lived in Michigan for three years! Why? Because ten years in a row is too many times for any Big 10 team to beat another in my book (that's what it would be if the Wolverines win!)

Also, you just have to wonder how many more years Coach Paterno has left on the sidelines. So, I'd like to see one of college football's legendary coaches go out on top with a Big Ten, and dare I say, even a National Championship!

Here's to good times and a good game in Happy Valley!

A day with Man's Best Friends!

Velvet and I went to the 19th Annual Tailwaggers Trot for the first time and we had a lot of fun! We walked, we mingled and made some new friends. I was a judge for the best Halloween costume. There were so many cute costumes it was really difficult to make a decision, so there were at least 7 instead of the usual top 3 dogs that went home with a prize!

Will Penn State Stay Undefeated

From the sportswire: "the third-ranked Nittany Lions look to end a nine-game losing streak against the Wolverines on Saturday in Happy Valley, they'll find a Michigan team coming off one of the ugliest losses in that school's history."

But still - the Wolverines did beat a good Wisconsin team, and nine victories in a row over Penn State - that's a lot of history to overcome!

Still, this Penn State football team is already ranked number #3 in the nation, and 1st in the Big Ten Conference. Even Ohio State, who they play next after Michigan, already has one loss.

So here is the question, do you think the Nittany Lions will remain undefeated after this Saturday?

And, dare we say, make a run for the National Championship?

A Night Out On the Town

This past Saturday Lynette and I had a chance to wear fabulous clothes for a fabulous cause.

It was the 7th Annual Ronald McDonald House Gala in Harrisburg. The food was delicious and everyone had a great time raising money, dancing, and bidding on a silent auction. I was in a bit of a bidding war with another couple for a wine tour in Lancaster County - it got intense in the end - but I came out the winner! And all the money was worth it.

Out-of-town families of sick children at Penn State Children's Hospital stay at the Ronald McDonald House so moms, dads and siblings can stick together during tough times. To help more families, the House is expanding and adding more rooms. This weekend's gala and other events are helping raise the money -- we were so happy to be invited and help out!

It's one thing to report on an event like a Country Festival for the news. It's another to try to ride a bucking bull. But it's a whole different ballgame when you combine the two, as I quickly found out about a year ago! You see the pic here, notice the microphone in my hand. A crowd had gathered to my right when they saw " one of those news guys saddlin' up." What did they see about 40 seconds later? Me getting flung off the spinning metal animal. Luckily, it was a soft landing...and a pretty long "one hand" ride! "Live from the Mechanical Bull Pit, this is Wyatt Everhart, signing off..."

What I Can't Get Enough Of...

There are a few things I can't get enough of right now.

The first is the song, Untouched by The Veronicas. I only heard it on the radio once. Now I listen to it everyday - probably 6 times a day. It's such a great, work-out song and I'm addicted.

The second is The Hungry Girl cookbook by Lisa Lillien. It's full of healthy recipes for girls who are hungry all the time - like me. I tried its pumpkin soup - didn't turn out so hot, because I think I added too much cumin (a strong spice). I'm going to try it's fiber cereal onion rings. I'll let you know how that turns out.

Lastly, I could look at pictures from my Aunt Lisa all day long. She loves in Durango, Colorado and has amazing scenery. Who doesn't love snow-capped mountains??

Ike Recovery in Texas Hazardous Work

Hi All,

Thought I'd post an update from a friend of mine who works for a power company in Maryland. He's on one of the crews dispatched from our region to help restring power lines in Texas and along the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricanes Ike and Gustav.

How did this truck end up on it's side? Apparently, the bucket got extended out to far and took a strain as a poll was being put in place, and then, quote, "she laid over!"

He sent me this in a text message from the scene. It was not his truck, but it did belong to his company.

I think it just goes to show you, that even thought it's been weeks since those hurricanes hit, the tough work of recovery is still being carried on by many Americans there. And yes, it can be dangerous.

Cashing In

I love, LOVE coins. Pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters. I do not discriminate. I find them in the car, junk drawer and underneath the sofa. And earlier this year, I started collecting them in a high-tech piggy bank.

With high gas prices and the expensive cost of food there's less money to have fun with. So this is my silver or "copper" lining to a tougher economy.

I think I'll spend it on a fancy dinner before the Madonna concert on November 22nd. Will I have enough cash? Click on the photo gallery to see how much I've banked.

A taste of Fall!

I am welcoming the change of seasons and I'm glad that Fall has arrived. When I think of Fall I think of the leaves changing, the smell of burning wood in the fireplace along with the smell of hot chocolate, extra blankets on the bed and just a cozy time in general. I also think about picking apples and picking pumpkins and that is exactly what Kiersten and I did yesterday. Check it out!

Is it a bird, is it a plane - wait it is a bird!

Earlier this week, we had a chirping sparrow flying around the studio. It was diving and swooping and soaring around the cameras. Luckily, it never debuted on-air because that would have been a classic "you tube" moment. Thank goodness. But we did snap some pictures!

And ironically, my aunt Debbie also discovered an unusual animal in her workplace in Concord, New Hampshire. While getting a coffee, she heard some noise behind the trash can. What was it?? Click on the photo gallery to see!

My Dad! Today is his birthday so we'll be celebrating later tonight.

This weekend, me, my parents, Andrew and his mom all headed down to the beach to squeeze some last summer fun out of September.

Shockingly - the rain held off and we saw a good amount of sunshine. We also went out to dinner, watched Batman Begins (I wish it saw it before I watched The Dark Knight) and I had a chance to start my new book.

The 'Fastest' Story I Ever Did...

I mentioned it this morning on FOX 43 Morning News, that I would be blogging about one of my favorite stories I've ever done for the news, that ended up taking me "faster than I ever dreamed."

That last part, is an understatement.

I got a call from the news assignment desk on day not long before SuperBowl 40, saying "the Air National Guard had called" and wanted to know if someone one would be willing to "go up on a security intercept" with them. One sidenote: the patrol would be in a F-16 fighter jet.

They didn't have to ask me twice. I gladly volunteered. We went up on an alternate day after being delayed with an initial mission "scrub" for bad weather.

But it was worth going back, b/c after jumping in the back seat, and flying along for the mission, (intercepting the "bad guy" - an unidentified aircraft, headed for the SuperBowl), my pilot Cujo decided we would quote; "burn some gas up" on the way home.

How so? A series of "combat maneuvers" in the open sky, which involved pulling 5, 7 then 9 "G's" - then going out over Lake Huron where we promptly hit about 700 mph and broke the sound barrier! That was a surreal experience. Very smooth to my surprise, I didn't feel or hear a "bang." But I was amazed how fast the fuel gauge dropped during those few seconds!

Lastly, on the way home I asked if he would do a "head over heels" style 360-loop -

All in all, it was definitely more extreme than I bargained for. I was happy to get back on the ground, but I'll never regret going to do the story. And one other thing I learned, those military jet pilots are an incredibly talented and disciplined group. My hat is off to all military pilots.

Stepping Back in Time

This Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28 is the Annual Native American Festival at Indian Steps Museum.

It's a beautiful location on the Susquehanna River in Lower Chanceford Township, York County.

At the turn of the century, a lawyer from York used to hunt there but he would always find arrowheads, jewelry and pieces of cooking ware.

It was all left by the Susquehannocks - a Native American tribe which headed out west in the 1700's. So the lawyber built an amazing house and stuck all his discoveries in the mason work. In preserving history today, experts now say this is a "big no-no" which makes it even more unique!

If you haven't visited Indian Steps - you need to! I absolutely love history and it's packed full of local artifacts, stories and legends.

I mentioned this morning on FOX 43 News that I'd be blogging about one of my favorite hobbies.

Here it is - good ole' fishing! I'm avid lover of the water & most water sports, but there's nothing like the thrill of the hunt for big fish.

Most of these pics show smallmouth bass, or as I like to call em' : "smallies."

They might just be my favorite to fish for, but, I do like to target just about all species. Also, I'm strict about catch and release - and only ever "keep a few" if I'm fishing in saltwater...and then rarely. (I have NEVER kept a bass).

Where did I get catch the fish in these pics? Mostly at Lake St. Clair in Michigan. In the picture you see here I'm with my mentor in the sport and good buddy, pro angler & guide Gerry Gostenik.

However, I can't wait to get out on some of PA's fine lakes now that I live here!

28 Miles!

I rode my bicycle - for 28, very long miles this weekend. It was with my parents on the Schuylkill Bike Trail from Valley Forge down to Philadelphia. Lots of great exercise, but whew! I needed a nap afterwards.

Later that night, we headed back to the city for my friend Kate's birthday. It was a fabulous night.

Many of my friends' birthdays are in autumn - so prepare to see many more festive snapshots.

Who was the star

Michael Grier Jr. that's who! He started off being the star at his Christening this past Saturday. He looked so cute in his little white suit! Sunday he stole the show again at the Washington Nationals baseball game. I could not help stealing a kiss from this little cutie pie as he shows his 2 bottom front teeth in this picture with his mother and my cousin, Sandra.

Last Weekend of Summer 08'

It's hard to believe it's over. I think this past summer may have gone by faster than any I can remember.

The good news is that it ended on such a strong note. Weather was perfect, which worked out well as I had to take a trip down to Bethesda, MD.

The drive was beautiful, and I actually got to open the sunroof (which is something that only works temp-wise about two weeks in the Spring and Fall each year.

However, I did get caught on I-83 in York coming back. BAD accident, and a major back-up. But I was able to get off the Interstate pretty quick at the next exit and take a back way home.

Anyway, I think my lesson learned from this Summer: time goes by faster and faster. Strangely enough, I had more free time than normal this summer, and for some reason, that made it go even faster.

Which is lesson #2: Stay busy! (which will *not* be a problem here at FOX 43!)

Hmm...I'm thinking golf

The fabulous weather really got me thinking about things I can do outside and golf came to mind. I already have everything I need...clubs, balls, shoes and a cute outfit! Therefore, I have no excuses not to go out and play. Oh, I just thought of one....I'm not very good! I was in a golf shop and I saw the cutest golf club cover that I want to get. It reminds me of Velvet!

Books, Films and Music

Books: I just finished re-reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It's such an amazing book. Toshi, morning show producer, is also reading it. And Val on the assignment desk just ordered it from Amazon.com.

The story is about a young girl in Pennsylvania who dies and watches her family from heaven. And the movie is coming out next year!

Film: Andrew and I watched No Country for Old Men last weekend. It was absolutely incredible. It was written by Cormac McCarthy, the same author who wrote The Road. Rent it this weekend.

Music: I love Fridays and I love them even more when I listen to The Rose 101.3 FM. They play 80's music all day on Fridays. I heard Don Henley, "Boys of Summer" this morning. One of my favorites! Have a great weekend!

It is Thursday - can you believe the weekend is almost here?

I had a work computer meltdown (aka Blue Screen of Death) but I'm able to blog remotely!

Andrew and I went to the Phillies game last weekend -- they are doing spectacular and the post-season is looking positive! ANY post-season for Philadelphia sports is a very good thing.

Also this week, I picked up my dry cleaning. 21 pieces! But I found a gem of a spot. It's called Zips in York County. Everything is a $1.99 - 2 bucks! It doesn't matter if you bring in a formal dress or a down comforter. Plus, it's ready the next day!

Hi all,

Just wanted to take this opportunity to say Hi to all of our FOX 43 bloggers out there and to relay a recent roadtrip experience in our area.

Late last week I had the opportunity to make the drive from York up to the VA Hospital just south of Lebanon. It was a gorgeous day of weather. The trip took me by Lancaster where the traffic was pleasantly absent. After that it was a bit "stop and go" I as headed north to Lebanon.

On the way, I went through the town of Manheim. I didn't really have time to stop and smell the roses, but everything about the town seemed so pleasant. A real slice of "Americana" - with some pretty cool looking restaurants and pubs.

Like I said, I didn't have a ton of free time on this trip, but you can be sure I'll be going back soon to give Manheim a closer look!

What's in My Desk Drawer

FOOD! I keep lots of tasty treats in my desk at work. Especially since we launched our 4-hour Morning Show - I need to snack throughout. I get hungry!

And now that it is fall. I get hungry for soups. I love them - they fill you up and warm you up.

My favorite right now is the microwavable Campbell's Select Harvest. Great, easy lunch with only 250 calories for the whole bowl, low sodium - yum. The Italian Wedding Soup is delicious. Plus, I found them at Wal-mart for $1.25. A dollar and a quarter! You can't beat it.

is all I can say about where Kiersten and I went and what we did. We went to Maize Quest which is a cornfield maze. The goal of the maze is to get you lost and that is exactly what happened to us. We got lost and had a ball doing it! There is so much to do at Maize Quest rain or shine. Check out the video...

Post Birthday Bash

So after a lot of food and countless cupcakes my birthday weekend has officially winded down.

I got a new digital camera - yay! - so no more excuses for slacking on the blogging. And Andrew got me a hot pink running watch, so no more "guess-imating" how far or fast I've gone.

Tropical Storm Hanna was not invited to my party but she crashed it anyway on Saturday, dumping lots of wind and rain. I still had a fabulous night on the town with my friends.

Today is my birthday!! Many you probably already knew that because we talked about it a few times this morning (actually about a few dozen times).

Tonight I'm having dinner with my parents and Andrew. Tomorrow, I'm meeting up with all my friends for college. Can't wait!

A Little Bit of This That

I'm back from a mini vacation in Sea Isle City, NJ. Thursday and Friday were a bit rainy and overcast. But we kept busy with a 1,000 piece puzzle. It actually turned out to be a 997 piece puzzle - we were missing a few - total bummer.

But what a great way to say goodbye (unofficially) to the summer!

Now onto fall -- one of my favorite seasons. But I feel like some people are even more excited than me! I saw a house on my way to work with ghost and goblin decorations and you can get tasty candy corn at your local drugstore. Can you stand it???

Guess who the impromptu guest live on the set of the Fox43 Morning News show was yesterday? Okay, time is up.....The Chick-fil-A Cow!!

He and A Chick-fil-A spokesperson were here to promote a free give away that was going on all day yesterday. Anyone who visited a Chick-fil-A restaurant dressed in sports attire or if you were not dressed in sports attire but knew about the offer than you were given a free 3 pack of chicken strips. The promotion was to "kick off" the upcoming football season..woo hoo!

A day with the dogs

Kiersten and I spent the day with the dogs and it was great but it was even better for the them, especially my favorite dog....Velvet! The three of us went to the dog park because it is a great way for you and your dog to get some exercise or just relax but the best thing about visiting the dog park is the fact that it is free!

My new favorite thing.....a Brownie Cappacino Blast! It is a blended treat that consists of coffee, jamoca ice cream and brownies. I have it made a special way. I get caramel on the bottom and on the top, whip cream and then a brownie on top of the whip cream....ahhh...it's absolutely heavenly!!

Unfortunately, I can only indulge myself Fridays after the show and on Saturdays because it is loaded with caffiene and I do not need any additional energy in the mornings! Everyone who works on the morning show is in full agreement that any and all caffienated beverages are off limits too me but that is just fine because I have a natural high!

Yukon is my dog-cousin and this is his 10th birthday. He's an Alaskan Malamute and lives with my aunt and uncle in Durango, Colorado.

My Aunt Lisa admits she put a lot of time into Yukie's birthday but I think all pet lovers do this for the furry members of their family....right???

It has started. Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour kicked off in Europe this weekend. And I'm seeing her stateside - in Atlantic City - this November.

I'm beyond excited. I've loved Madonna since I was little. In fact, I have so many of her hits on my ipod that when it's in shuffle mode you hear her tunes almost every third song.

Whether you hate her or love her, Madonna is an icon. She may be surrounded in controversies but she's 50, fit - and I believe - fabulous.
